Closed captions are essential for video accessibility. RingCentral Events provides automatic captions for Stages, Sessions, Expo, Networking and Replay segments. This guide explains how to disable caption for individual Stages.

Note: Closed captions in Sessions, Expo, Networking and Replay are automatic and cannot be disabled.

Disabling Closed Captions

Closed captions are enabled in the Stage settings by default when StreamYard is selected as a stream provider. To disable closed caption on a Stage:

  1. Go to Event Dashboard > Venue > Stages. Here you can review the list of created Stages. Under Stream Provider, the CC icon indicates if captions are enabled for a Stage.
  2. Hover over the selected Stage and click the Pencil icon to edit it.
  3. In the Stage settings, under Live closed captioning, clear the Closed Captions checkbox.
  4. Click Save.

Attendee experience

If you enabled or disable the captions in the middle of a live Stage segment, attendees within the Stage area will see a notification that Closed Captions have been enabled/disabled.

Once on, the attendees will see the CC button at the bottom of the video feed. To learn more about the attendee experience, refer to our guide on Using Closed Captions on Stage.

Known limitations of Closed Captions within Stages

There are several limitations of Closed Captions when using them in the Stage areas:

  • Do not function in full screen mode
  • Not available in Firefox or Safari
  • Not available on the Mobile App
  • It will not identify who said what, but only what is said
  • Captions will not be recorded
  • Captions will only work in English (American, British, and Canadian).
Note: Closed captions is also available for content that is being RTMP streamed into Stage, unlike into a Session room or an Expo booth.
